# Why RSS?
RSS is a formallization of the original approach to 'social media'. Let creators post their content where ever they want on the internet. Let people find the creators they like and follow them. No middle man, no ads, no data grabbing. Creators have full control over what to publish to their audience. Subscribers have full control over what to follow.
Early versions of this decentralized approach have existed since the late 90's. Since the social media boom in the 2010's, RSS has been less mainsream, even thought a lot of sites support it and most every podcast you subscribe to is using it (or Atom). In the 2020's, it seems more attention is being paid to the dark patterns social media companies have been using, maybe a decentralized approach could gain traction again.

# How do I get started with RSS?
All you need is a tool that downloads the latest content from the feeds you are following. There are hundreds of these tools. They exist on every platform iOS, Android, windows, Mac, Linux, web. In general, a tool that does this is called an 'RSS aggregator'. I selfhost [FreshRSS](https://github.com/FreshRSS/FreshRSS) and love it. Try different tools until you find one you like! The beauty of this approach is that the list of feeds you follow is _your list_. Most every tool will let you export that list and import it somewhere else.
